Music (is)...My life
Since YVS is being revamped in 2010 it was decided we should add a little more written creativity to the site. My new blog is the result, brought to you from Amsterdam every week; I’ll be writing about my crazy life as a student and the things I see and do (at least the interesting ones). I’ll also be telling you what I was listening to that week in effort to spread the music.
So this week kicked off on Saturday night, BIG jouvert jam up in Holland. Naturally all Caribbean peeps united to bring down the place. Big ups to my boys from Godfatha Sounds (http://www.1stlineradio.com) for having us rocking all night as well as Spiceland Entertainment (http://www.partypeeps2000.com/events/promotor/52/1/Spiceland_Entertaiment.aspx )for setting up a great jam once again. The soca and dancehall tunes were off the chain but the most entertaining moment was when Gyptian’s Hold Yuh came on…an all mighty roar let out from the crowd and a gyal literally dance her man off the platform and into a crack between the platform and emergency exit LOL. And…they just keep dancing, talk about love for the song (check out the Hold Yuh Riddim if you haven’t already).
Fast forward to Monday, during a free period my classmate and I set up a little jam in the cafeteria. As DJ for this impromptu boredom killer I threw on Success is the Best Revenge Vol.4 by DJ Spy (www.asylumradio.ning.com ). We thought the party was gonna be on a lock down when a professor walked over. But instead of asking us to turn down the music, he wanted to know where he could get the mixtape. Props to DJ Spy for being able to loosen up the most uptight teacher on campus (check out SITBR 4 and download it now at: http://asylumradio.ning.com/page/sitbr-download )!
Tuesday night I fell asleep listening to the new R&B show from DJ MadSkills & DJ Classik (www.yorkvillestudios.com ). The tunes were good, well worth staying up til 3 AM for (I finished work late that night). My pillow had some good company that’s for sure lol. If you missed the episode you can catch up by checking out this link: http://www.yorkvillestudios.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=section&layout=blog&id=9&Itemid=67
Had to babysit my little cousins today, picking up from school, the usual. Seeing as they never set foot in the Caribbean I take it upon myself to show them a little culture. While helping one of them on a project about Bob Marley I was playing one of Da Truth’s ( www.smittysmitts.com )mixtape Sorry 06. It features reggae songs and riddims for 2007 and is definitely a great selection of the best tunes. Not only did it keep me entertained, but now my younger cus wants to do reggae riddims at drum class. Not bad Da Truth, you inspired a love for the music in the next generation. You can download the mixtape here: http://www.mediafire.com/?kjadmmln5yd .
Most embarrassing moment of the week was definitely tonight waiting for the bus to go home. I was alone at the bus stop (or so I thought) and got kinda carried away with a tune. So I started singing “Thing for your girlfriend” by Royce da 59 ft. Kay Young. When the bus pulls up I turn and around and realise there’s a whole cue of people who heard my very off key rendition of this hilarious street hop track….FML.
